Final Radio

Radio Station

We currently have our final exam for the radio unit; we have had to come up with a Commercial Radio ‘What’s On’ Programme, we have to record this as live infant of Zoe our lecturer for this unit. We have had to make the radio station as much like ‘capital south’ as possible, so we decided on a morning breakfast show, fortunately i have listened to capital in the past so i had a rough idea of what to put in there. My group and i do like our music and gossip type stuff with the celebrities and music artist in the UK so we have something to do that we actually enjoy and know talking about with is a bonus. I am the role of studio manager which includes getting all the sound clips for adverts, music and any sounds playing, i also have to connect to the OB and make sure that is all good and is aired. I will also be glueing all the show together because everything will be played on my command so i do need to make sure that i’m concentration for the full 15 mins and it will have to hit 15 mins dead on which is a bit nerve racking because it all relies on my if anything messes up or goes badly. I do have faith in me and my group because we have worked hard and have practised a lot so i am hoping it all goes to plan and we do well.

Final Graphics

I have now completed all m y graphics which i a relived to say the least, it took a lot more time than i originally thought. but looking back at it now i’m glad i got them all done in time and with time to make a few changes or improvements if needed. The reports for them were tough to do, it was hard to talk about them in so much detail. For the illustrator we had to make two drawings of a sharpener, one intact and one fully dismantled. For Photoshop i had to make a Private Eye cover with a picture of myself and then i had to make it look like i was old. The Animate task was to create a SouthPark video of Cartman lighting Kenny on fire with a gas canister and then Kenny turning into ash. Then for the After Affects we had to put a video onto an image of a phone, manipulate the background and add subtitles. Finally for Cinema 4D we had to make a trophy and make it stay in one place whilst in a video that is panning through an office. I have followed all the steps to these tasks and in my opinion i have done well for a first time using these softwares.

Evan Pugh

Evan Pugh

Evan Pugh is a television director that has directed shows such a Big Brother, Love Island and I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. Luckily we had a lecture by him and he told us loads about his director role and what he does in a typical day when on set. He based his talk on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and showed us lots of papers that he uses when shooting the latest series of the show. He gave us all a great insight in what he does before, during and after the show and by the sounds of it he doesn’t really have much of a break. He talked all about the role of a director and what he has learnt just through experience. I have always had an interest in the role of a director and think it is something that i would like to go into so this lecture was extra interesting for me in that sense. Evan Pugh made the role of a director sound fun and wants me to push more to get up my directing skills and show off what i can do at every opportunity now so that i get as much practise as i possibly can. He told us lots of stories that he has experienced just from being on set.

On Set

VT 2

This picture is from the shoot day for my groups location VT on Park Building. for this VT we had to do a moving interview with a knowledgeable subject, so we made our knowledgable subject our presenter because as director i thought this was a good idea to do for the type of VT it was. We made our interview based around history and architecture. We thought of the park building as maybe our 5th choice because we got turned away or the other places simply didn’t get back to us but actually this could have worked out for the best as we got lots of information across and showed a lot of the building off. There was plenty of opportunities to get cut away shots because there was so much interesting looking parts of the building that they looked really nice to film and went well with what we were talking about at that moment in time. I think this will go down well when it gets marked because it shows all the stuff it needed and it looks really nice the way it is filmed. We had some issues because the batteries the loan store gave us were already low so we were rushed for time so that wasn’t ideal but we luckily got all the shots we need so we then had more time to edit. The editing went well it just took longer than we thought so towards the end it was a little rushed swell so hopefully that isn’t noticeable. If we had more time on the edit i think this would be really good.

Live show

Studio

Today was our live show for the tv skills unit. I was on camera 3, set design and the VT director. Camera i took over from another person as I got told by the producer of the show that they wanted me to do it rather than them, i did get told this in plenty off advance so i got to practise the camera moves and what shots to get at what time. I also done set design, i don’t have a photo of it but i thought it was good but not great, i should have got in contact with the producer a lot sooner than i did to give her my ideas for the set, i had issues when trying to come up with ideas as they all got shut down because of health and safety and things that were just not possible. I overcame this by having projectors on the background with covered both the wide angle shots and the single shots for the camera’s. Finally for the VT director we had two VT’s to film these went as smoothly as they could have because there was only me the VT producer and VT camera man that turned up to both shoots. i had to take upon the role for VT sound swell as still being director because this was the only way to overcome the issue. the VT’s did turn out really good and i was really pleased with them even though we didn’t have all the people we should have. When it comes to the final live show i think it went really really well and smoothly on my part i don’t everything that i needed to, i got all the set, set up before the preparation and on camera i done everything that i need to and everything that i practiced and got it almost spot on. I also think that the live show in general went so well and i was pleased with how much of it that is saw.

Talent Executive talk

Trine Adler

This was a talk from the Talent Executive for the BBC Trine Adler. Adler has worked on many things but being the talent executive means that she is the one who finds the production team for the shows from entry level to all the way to the top. She told us how she chooses some people over the other people that apply and what she looks out for in a CV. I also learnt how much people learn on the job by actually doing it rather than just being taught it in a lecture. We got examples from her past experience of how people prosper the they get set with the actual task.

CV help

Industry Talk

This talk was by someone in the television industry and she was informing us of what it is like and how to get in there. The main tips she gave across were for things to put and not to put on our CV’s and how to prepare for an interview and things to say in the interview and things not to say in the interview. This is probably one of the most important lecture that we have had from someone in the industry because she sort of prepared us for what it is like once you make it in the industry and how to get there. Even though i already have a CV now i know what i need to add to make more companies attracted to me from the information that i give them on my CV, especially aiming it towards the television and broadcast area. This lecture was really helpful and some day i hope that i can use the skills that i learnt and put them into practice when i have interviews further down the line when i am looking for a job.

Introduction to making a live TV show

TV Studio

This is the unit that we have to make a television show that is as live. We learnt all about the roles in the studio and in the gallery, from floor manager to vision mixer. There is loads of different roles for this type of show and some that i didn’t even know about before. First i was floor manager with i enjoyed, then i was moved into the gallery and had my go at the director, this is thought was difficult at first but once i got the hang of it I improved and done a better job. The next session i was on camera which is fun to do because you get to show off your creative thoughts on what angle and what type of shot is best for this type of program; then for the other half of the session i went back into the gallery to have my turn as the vision mixer, I found this really hard as remembering which camera is which button and what buttons were for the Ulay and the VT’s, so i decided this role wasn’t anything i was interested in and didn’t wan t to carry it on, but I’m glad i gave it a go because no i know for sure.

Careers talk

Careers and Employability talk

This was just one of the talks we had on this day because the whole day of lectures were cancelled to accommodate for all these career type talks, there was many talks to attend and I went to 3 due to me thinking these are the most helpful and the talks that would most apply to me and what i would like to do in the future. There was plenty of information in these talks that would help with jobs and putting yourself out there and it made what was more just the unknown to actually knowing more about it. This was really good for me to attend as it gave me a lot more understanding on the whole thing.

Practising Radio

Radio station

We got to put all of what we learnt into practice and pretend we were doing our own little show. One person got to sit at the studio desk and then the other got to sit by one of these microphones on the other side of the desk and just have a chat to see what it was like to talk and hear themselves and just how it was. It was fun to do and i enjoy putting these things into practise and testing what it is like.
